Flatten PDF turns interactive form fields into ordinary page content, so what is filled in stays exactly as it is and cannot be changed by the next person who opens the file. It runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
A fillable PDF keeps its fields live: anyone can click in and change a name, a date or a checkbox. That is useful while you are completing the form, but not once it is done. Flattening bakes the current values into the page itself, so the form looks identical but the fields are gone.
It also helps when a PDF viewer or a print shop shows form fields inconsistently, or when a portal rejects a file because of interactive elements. Flattening gives a plain, predictable document.
Only form fields are flattened. Other annotations, such as drawn shapes or comments, are not affected. If the PDF has no form fields, the tool saves it unchanged and tells you so. To fill a form first, use Fill PDF Forms.
